This black widow lived outside my front door in central California. I caught it in a jar, took some pictures, and released it by the railroad tracks. They usually don’t kill full grown adults but cause a lot of pain. I think the U.S. death rate from spiders is about six a year. Here’s a video of an awesome macrophotographer handling a smaller but similar spider:
The black widow family includes a number of different species throughout the world, such as the Australian red back.
The spider in this video is a western black widow, which is found in the western U.S. The marking is slightly different than the red back and located on the underside of its abdomen.
