Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man could appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, but his potential return cannot simply be that. Maguire first appeared as the Web-Slinger in 2002’s Spider-Man, which not only became a massive hit but also fully birthed the modern superhero movie craze. Maguire returned as Peter in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, but his wall-crawling days seemed to be over when Sony rebooted Spidey on film with 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man. However, that changed with the 2021 mega-hit Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The multiverse-based plot of No Way Home brought Maguire’s Spider-Man together on-screen with Andrew Garfield’s and Tom Holland’s and sparked massive enthusiasm for further adventures with both Maguire and Garfield. Maguire has expressed openness for more Spider-Man, amid speculation that he might be set to return again in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars. While such an appearance by Maguire would be an exciting prospect, it also would be a limiting one. Here is why, if Tobey Maguire is to continue as Peter Parker, Spider-Man 4 is as necessary to his story as an appearance in Secret Wars.
