Turning Spider Silk Into a Super Material

Puffy Lux

💠 Scientists have been working for decades to reproduce spider silk, a substance that is five times stronger than steel. Randy Lewis’ research team was behind the cloning of the first spider silk genome in the 1990s. He hopes to use his research to create a synthetic version of the material. Researchers are experimenting with genetically engineered alfalfa and transgenic silkworms. Spider silk unexpectedly strains and bends above a certain amount of relative humidity, exerting enough force to compete with other materials being explored as actuators. Researchers hope the research will lead to a better understanding of spider silk’s properties.
