Randy Lewis’ research team was behind the cloning of the first spider silk genome in the 1990s. He hopes to use his research to create a synthetic version of the material. Researchers are experimenting with genetically engineered alfalfa and transgenic silkworms. Spider silk unexpectedly strains and bends above a certain amount of relative humidity, exerting enough force to compete with other materials being explored as actuators. Researchers hope the research will lead to a better understanding of spider silk’s properties.
