Redback Spider Barbie Winter Solstice Wonderland EDUCATIONAL VIDEO

Puffy Lux

Barbie the Redback spider is 6 months old. I checkout her spider nest on the Australian Winter solstice to see how she is going. I also notice 2 other small spiders living with her. One is definitely a very small female Redback spider, the other is unknown. It may be a Grey Widow spider in the way it reacted to my tweezers. I check the daytime temperature of the spider nest and it’s remarkably warm considering it’s Winter. Redback spiders tend to recluse during winter and not lay any spider egg sacs. It’s normally very difficult find these reclusive spiders in Winter. But Barbie has a special custom made spider home that I can inspect and see how she’s progressing. Female redback spiders can live for 3 years, but to do so they have to avoid many predators that also live in the garden. Anyway it’s nice to see what this Redback was up to on the shortest day of the year.

A solstice is an event occurring when the Sun appears to reach its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere. Two solstices occur annually, around June 21 and December 21. In many countries, the seasons of the year are determined by reference to the solstices and the equinoxes.
